1. What jobs/occupations have you held whilst being blind or vision

impaired?

I have been a Finance & Budget Officer with Victoria Police.  Other roles I have held have been Administration Officer and Divisional Office Manager.  Most of my work has been in Finance but I have performed some Administration and Personnel duties as well. I was the Budget Officer that successfully managed the finances of the Handgun Buyback of 2003-2004.

2. What industry/sector did the particular job involve?

I have been working with Victoria Police which is part of the Victorian Public Service.

3. What jobs/occupations do you know of that other blind or vision

impaired people have held?

I know that blind and vision impaired people have held a wide range of jobs and occupations.

4. What industry/sectors did these jobs involve?

A wide range of industries and occupations.

5. What have been the key challenges you have faced in your current

and/or previous roles that relate to your blindness or vision impairment?

The key challenges have been reading people's handwriting and large documents such as contract which at this point I have asked other people to read. I have been considering purchasing a scanner at some point in the future. Working away from my work location was a key challenge until my employer invested in a laptop for me.

6. How did you overcome these challenges?

I overcame my key challenges through my organization purchasing for me a laptop computer. Both the laptop and desktop have MaGic Screen enlargement with speech software. I also have a 21" Monitor which helps enlarge the screen even further on my desktop. I have a color closed circuit television and portable video magnifier which are also of great assistance. I ask for minor work such as handwriting to be read and I arrange for any overheads or other presentation to be given to me either electronically or in hardcopy. Because my employer recognizes my ability and that I am an integral part of the workforce there are minimal challenges arising as a result of my vision impairment. Often my work colleagues and managers forget that I am vision impaired when they interact with me in the workforce. I see this as a compliment. I am highly regarded for my work ethic even at senior levels within the organization.

7. What are your most recent or highest educational qualifications?

I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Melbourne in 1991 and a Graduate Diploma in Accounting at the Victoria University of Technology.
