United Nations (UN) Convention on the Human Rights of People with Disabilities

New York, 13 December 2006 - The United Nations General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. This Convention clarifies equal rights and non-discrimination for the 650 million persons around the world living with disabilities.

BCA has been advocating for Australians who are blind or vision impaired throughout the development of this Convention.


March 30, 2007: The Australian Government signs the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

UNCRPD Optional Protocol

Blind Citizens Australia encourages the Australian government to adopt the Optional Protocol to the UNCRPD. Read our position paper.


National Human Rights Consultation Submission

The government has been actively canvassing for feedback on the state of human rights protections and promotion in Australia, BCA made a submission to the National Human Rights Consultation highlighting the areas in which human rights for people with disability fall short and made suggestions on how the human rights that enable our greater participation might be better protected and promoted.


Inquiry into Migration Treatment of Disability

After much public discussion over the treatment of potential migrants and refugees with disability, Bill Shorten, Parliamentary Secretary for Disability and Children Services and Senator Chris Evans, Minister for Migration and Citizenship, called for an inquiry into the migration treatment of disability. BCA made a submission to the inquiry, supporting the human rights of all people living with disability.
