SIMPLE FIRST AID TIPS First aid doesn’t need to be complicated or scary. As long as we remember a few basic principles we can easily and adequately care for someone till an Ambulance arrives. Always follow the DRABCD process D anger – check for danger (you are no good to anyone if you get hurt too) R esponse – is the person awake or unconscious Do they need your help???? A irway – Make sure that there is no airway obstruction B reathing – Are they breathing C irculation – is their heart beating D efibrillation – the ambulance comes with their equipment The above process can help you to treat the most life threatening things. CHOKING IT IS IMPORTANT NOT TO PANIC!!!!! When someone is choking there is too types to listen for 1. Partial blockage; this is when you can hear someone coughing and gasping for breath. The cough is the body’s mechanism for clearing the airway so if they are coughing we know that they are getting a little bit of air in. But they can still panic and be very scared and uncooperative. Children often have a bit of a cough when first starting on solid food. Treatment for partial blockage is to encourage the person to cough it up and if it doesn’t clear call and ambulance for assistance. 2. Full or complete blockage: this means that this person cannot get any air at all. There will be NO coughing and not much sound. But don’t panics the person will be banging around for help so you will still hear them. Treatment for a full blockage is lain the person over your lap if you can and let gravity help. Call Ambulance. Place you hand on there back between the shoulder blades and using the base of your hand hit 2 times. If it doesn’t work repeat. If this doesn’t work lay person on floor on back and push on sternum 2 times REMEMBER THAT WHEN YOU CALL THE AMBULANCE THEY WILL REMIND YOU WHAT TO DO!!! GENERAL OUCHES AND BUMPS. Children and always falling tripping and bumping into things. This a normal part of exploring and gaining balance. There are a few first aid tricks that you can use to make your lives easier. We use what we call the RICE method for all bumps bruises and any other ouch REST ICE COMPRESSION ELEVATION This treatment has a few helpful effects. The ice and elevation help to reduce swelling making the injury heal faster. Ice is a natural pain killer so it can help reduce pain. The bandage can help reduce swelling and makes little people feel better If you think its broken Put a splint on it and call an Ambulance. BURNS ALWAYS CHECK WATER BEFORE PUTTING CHILDREN IN A BATH OR SHOWER! If you think your child is burnt call an ambulance and put them under cold running water. The best way to do this is to hop in the shower with them REMEMBER TO UNLOCK DOOR FOR AMBULANCE FIRST Keep burnt part under cool running water till it stops hurting GLADWRAP is a good burns dressing as it is airtight and non stick.
