About us
Blind Citizens Australia (BCA) is the national representative organisation of people who are blind or vision impaired in Australia. We advocate for our community through rights-based policies, campaigns and projects. Our purpose is to listen and respond to our members and the broader community and empower and represent people who are blind or vision impaired. As a disability-led organisation, our CEO and Board of Directors all have lived experience of blindness or vision impairment.
We are a small, geographically diverse, and highly collaborative team dedicated to making a meaningful difference in the lives of our members. We thrive on communication and innovation, and we pride ourselves on being a supportive workplace where we empower one another to “make things happen.”
At BCA, we understand that our strength lies in our different backgrounds and perspectives. We offer a truly flexible working experience and support adjusted hours to ensure our team can balance their professional and personal lives.
About you
You have an awareness of the issues faced by people who are blind or vision impaired such as accessibility, inclusion and impacts of discrimination.
You are a content creator with a passion for making information accessible, practical, and empowering. You have a unique ability to take complex information, such as government policy, legislation, or systemic barriers, and translate it into resources that are easy to understand and use.
You don’t just create content for the sake of it – you are driven by impact. You understand that a well-written toolkit or an engaging podcast can be the inspiration that enables a person who is blind or vision impaired to navigate a challenge or advocate for their rights.
Collaboration is at the heart of how you work. You enjoy consulting with diverse groups and are deeply committed to intersectionality. You recognise that the lived experience of blindness or vision impairment is not a monolith, and you take pride in ensuring that resources reflect and respect the voices of First Nations people, Deafblind, the LGBTQIA+ community, and people from culturally diverse backgrounds.
