Our final BCA Inform for 2022 was an exciting discussion on the next stage of the campaign for Audio Description (AD) on television.

Audio Description (AD) gives verbal narration of important visual elements such as scenes, settings, actions, costumes, and on-screen text, so that people who are blind or vision impaired can enjoy equal access to programming and entertainment.

In a recent decision, the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities found Australia has breached the rights of people who are blind and vision impaired by failing to meet its obligations under the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The UN Committee has called on the Australian Government to identify and remove any barriers to accessing free-to-air tv for people with a disability.

At this session of BCA Inform, we received an update on the UN decision, what we are doing to engage with the government in response, and the next steps in our campaign to expand AD services in Australia.
