Update from the CEO

Dear Members,

I am excited to welcome Mercy Jumo to the BCA team as our new Strategy, Project and Advocacy Manager. Mercy brings more than 25 years of international experience advancing human rights, policy and community-centred advocacy. Over the past seven years, she has worked as a Lead and Senior Policy Advisor with World Vision across Australia, South Asia and the Pacific, and has also held influential advocacy roles with Save the Children New Zealand and the U.S. Embassy.

Mercy brings her own lived experience of vision impairment and is passionate about ensuring our members’ voices remain at the centre of our advocacy and project delivery. She holds a Master of Philosophy and a Bachelor of Arts Honours and has served on numerous community boards supporting migrant communities and women’s rights both in Australia and internationally. I know you will join me and the rest of the team in giving Mercy a very warm welcome to the BCA community.

In other news, many of you may have already heard about AusAlert, Australia’s new emergency warning system that is currently undergoing community testing ahead of its national rollout later this year. Community testing is currently taking place across selected locations around the country, with a national test scheduled for Monday, 27th July 2026.

During the national test, compatible mobile devices across Australia will receive a test alert, helping emergency services and government agencies ensure the system is working effectively before it is used in real emergencies. No action will be required when the test alert is received, but it is important that you are aware it is coming. I encourage you to visit the AusAlert website to learn more about community testing, device compatibility and what to expect when the national test takes place.

There are also a number of important developments underway within the NDIS. The agency is continuing to test new approaches to planning and service delivery while seeking feedback from participants, families, providers and the broader community. Public consultation activities remain active, with several opportunities for people to contribute their views and experiences. Expressions of interest for provider consultations remain open, while expressions of interest for the consultations on First Nations children and young people and the future NDIS pathway for children and young people close on Tuesday, 30th June 2026. These conversations will help shape the future direction of the scheme, so I encourage members to stay informed and have their say where possible. Please visit the BCA website for the latest information, updates and links to consultation opportunities.

As we head into the final weeks of the financial year, our executive team has been busy with budget planning, reporting and preparing for the year ahead. This sets us up well to continue our work supporting members and driving our priorities forward.

Finally, we are recruiting for a Project Coordinator to join our growing team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to meaningful work that includes coordinating leadership and peer support initiatives. If you or someone in your network may be interested, please find more information below.

– Deb Deshayes, BCA CEO.

A reminder, you can also read this update on BCA’s website.

Policy, Advocacy & Representation

Policy Update – Melanie Chatfield

The Australian Government will be undertaking public consultation on a range of NDIS reforms that will impact on participants. There will be a lot of very technical and complex information to explain, and the Australian Government wants to understand what they can do to improve the way they communicate on changes to the NDIS that will affect participants.

They want to:

  • Give people the right amount of information, in the right way.
  • Allow people to engage with the topics they are interested in.
  • Allow people to provide feedback in a way that suits them.

To help BCA provide advice to the Australian Government, we want to know about your preferences for accessing information on changes to the NDIS.

You can complete the BCA survey or contact Melanie via email melanie.chatfield@bca.org.au or telephone 1800 033 660 before Monday, 22nd June.
