On Tuesday, 11th November, BCA Inform was held to provide an update on significant reforms underway in the aviation sector aimed at strengthening the rights of people with disability. Following the release of the Australian Government’s Aviation White Paper in August 2024, work has commenced on the development of new aviation-specific disability standards.

Participants heard from BCA’s Policy Officer Melanie Chatfield and BCA Representative Assunta Fogliaro, who recently took part in a series of co-design workshops and consultations with industry stakeholders. Assunta shared key insights from these discussions, highlighted emerging themes, and outlined the next steps in shaping Aviation Disability Standards.

Lee Kumutat, national Advocacy and Policy Manager at Guide Dogs, spoke about advocacy efforts and the growing awareness of disability issues within the aviation sector. She presented the Destination 2030 campaign, which aims to improve aviation accessibility for people who are blind or vision impaired

The session offered members an opportunity to better understand the reform process, the issues being raised by people with disability, and how these upcoming standards aim to improve the aviation experience for all.
